That "$99 whole-house special" is a bait ad - the real number appears once they are in your hallway, or the "clean" is a shop-vac at the register. We photograph the inside of your ducts before and after instead.

Guardsman Duct Sealing & Repair: The Atlanta Owner’s Guide

If you own a Guardsman duct sealing system or air purification unit, and something has failed – a seal, a gasket, a UV bulb socket, a relay – we stock the parts and do the repair. Most Guardsman duct sealing and repair jobs in Atlanta run between $220 and $480 installed, depending on what failed and how much of the duct run needs to be re-sealed. We carry the common Guardsman replacement parts on the truck, so a single visit usually gets the system back to working order.

Here’s how most people find the problem: the system has been running fine for years, then the airflow in one room starts feeling weak. Or the unit starts making a faint whistle near the return. Or the utility bill ticks up $25 a month with no obvious cause. By the time we open the access panel, the cause is usually straightforward – a seal that dried out, a gasket that compressed flat, or a fitting that works loose in Atlanta’s summer humidity cycles. Guardsman gear is typically solid, but the seals and consumables wear at a predictable rate.

One thing up front: Kestrel Air Duct Atlanta is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Guardsman, and we don’t claim to be. We work on Guardsman equipment because we know it, we stock the parts, and we stand behind the work.

Which Guardsman Models This Applies To

Guardsman has produced a few different product lines over the years, and the repair path differs depending on which one you have. The most common units we see in Atlanta homes are the Guardsman whole-house air purifiers and the Guardsman inline duct sealing kits, which install at the plenum or along the main trunk line. Duct sealing components – the mastic strips, gaskets, and collar seals – share sizing across most Guardsman residential models, but the air purifier internals do not. A UV lamp socket for a Guardsman PUR-2400 will not fit a PUR-1400, for instance, and the mounting brackets are different enough that you can’t adapt them.

Here’s how to identify what you have. Open the access panel or look at the exterior label. Guardsman stamps the model number on the side of the cabinet for air purifiers, or on the flange for duct sealing collars. You’ll see something like PUR-1400, PUR-2400, or DS-6 / DS-8 for the sealing kits. The DS-8 collar is the larger diameter – 8 inches versus 6 – and the mastic tape widths follow accordingly. If the label is worn off or painted over, measure the duct collar diameter and count the number of UV bulbs. That narrows the model line quickly.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: for Guardsman duct sealing components, OEM is the safer route. The mastic formulation and the gasket durometer are specific, and aftermarket generic collars often fail within a season because they’re not matched to the thermal expansion rate of the original housing. On the air purifier side, OEM bulbs and sockets are what we install – aftermarket UV bulbs sometimes draw differently and can burn out the ballast prematurely. We’ll quote either one if you ask, but our recommendation on Guardsman is OEM for anything that touches the seal or the electrical side.

Signs Your Guardsman Duct Sealing & Repair Is Failing

  • Weak airflow in one or two rooms. A failed collar seal or a cracking mastic joint lets conditioned air bleed into the attic or crawlspace before it reaches the register. We see this most often in ranch homes around Decatur where the ducts run through the attic and the seal takes a beating from 140-degree summer heat.
  • A whistling or faint hissing near the return plenum. That’s air being pulled through a small gap where the seal has compressed. It’s more audible when the system is in its first three minutes of run time and the pressure differential is highest.
  • Noticeably higher cooling bills in July and August. Atlanta summers are unforgiving on duct systems. A failing Guardsman seal leaks conditioned air into unconditioned space, and the system runs longer to hit the thermostat setpoint. You’ll see it before you feel it in the rooms.
  • Dust or insulation fines collecting around a register. If the seal on the trunk line has failed, the negative pressure can pull attic insulation into the duct and push it into the house. It’s a specific kind of dirt – gray and fibrous, not the usual household dust.
  • The Guardsman unit itself is working but you smell nothing downstream. For whole-house purifier units, a failing gasket at the housing door or around the UV socket lets air bypass the UV chamber. The bulb works – the air just goes around it.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Atlanta, a Guardsman duct sealing repair – re-sealing a failed collar, replacing a compressed gasket, or re-mastic’ing a trunk-line joint – typically runs $220 to $360, including the part and the labor. A full duct sealing job across an entire system, where we access every collar and seal from the plenum to the registers, runs $450 to $680 depending on house size and duct count. Air purifier repairs – a ballast, a socket, a lamp – typically land between $190 and $420, with the part accounting for most of the difference.

What’s included: the replacement part, the labor to install it, and a written price before anything is touched. That last part is the Kingswell Guarantee – we put the number in your hands before we start, and it does not change at the door. The work itself is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails within the year, we return and make it right at no charge. That’s written on every job sheet, not a verbal promise.

DIY or Call Us?

Some things you can check safely, and some things you shouldn’t touch. The safe checks: look at the visible duct collars in the attic or crawlspace for cracked mastic or a visibly shifted joint. If you see separation, that’s a call to us – but identifying it helps you understand the quote. The unsafe part: any work that involves opening the Guardsman cabinet, accessing the electrical side, or re-sealing a joint that’s under duct tension. UV units run on ballasts that hold charge, and a duct joint that’s carrying weight can shift abruptly when a seal is cut free. We’ve seen a homeowner get a face full of duct board fragments from a joint that let go. If you’re not sure, call us. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s worth a visit.

Dale Whitmore has been doing this work across Atlanta for years – from the ranch houses in Decatur to newer construction near Ponce City Market – and he’ll tell you the same thing: the expensive repairs usually happen on systems where someone tried to save $80 with a DIY patch. Call (470) 378-1006 and we’ll figure out what you actually need.
